About Luis

Luis Arredondo is known for his energetic dance style, risk-taking, continuous smile, and detailed approach to the learning process. Originally from Spain, he came to Toronto in 2011 and continues to confound and amuse people with his accent to this day. His love of dancing extends to the teaching process, and in 2016 he decided to quit his job as an architect to work full time as a dance instructor. The Lindy Hop (and Balboa) revolution has been full steam ahead ever since!

He has focused on expanding his studio in Toronto, Lindy Hop Revolution, and refining his teaching style and technique. Luis likes to keep his classes moving with lots of positive energy, interesting shapes, and a healthy sprinkling of technique. He likes to make sure each class is getting what it needs to succeed, and no two classes are exactly the same! He has traveled and competed around North America and Europe and has won and placed in many national and international competitions.

As an instructor, he teaches Lindy Hop and Balboa across Canada and has recently started teaching in the US as well. He looks forward to seeing you all in class, to fill your mind with dancing tips and interesting new pronunciations of common words!

About Valerie

Val started swing dancing socially in 2003 and never looked back. Moving to Toronto in 2007, Valerie pursued her dance education at the Swing and Tap Academy of Toronto, Hogtown Swing, Pollock Dance Studio, Bees Knees Dance, Gangbusters, T.O. Blues, Mazouka Dance, Joy of Dance, You Can Dance Studios, Lindy Hop Revolution and at countless Lindy, Blues, and Balboa events around the world. While she continues to enjoy the challenge of performing and competing, for Val, the joy of Swing dancing lies in the conversation to be had in every dance, between partners and the music.

Preparing for the Workshop: Important Reminders

Whether this is your first swing dance workshop or you're seasoned dancer, here's a few things to keep in mind to ensure you get the most out of your dance workshop experience. Be sure to bring a refillable water bottle, towel, change of clothes (t-shirt, pants, dress etc.). and snacks for between classes. Keep in mind that breaks are between 15 and 30 minutes in duration so you won't necessarily have enough time to leave the venue between classes.

Be sure to bring a notebook and pen to take notes after class and camera to record lesson recaps. Bring a comfortable pair of canvas, ballroom dance shoes, or otherwise shoes with a little grip to them (but not too much) to wear separate from your outdoor wear. High heels, boots, and sandals are not ideal for swing dancing. No need to dress to the nines - this is a workshop and not a social dance.

About The Lindy Hop Dance

Lindy Hop is a partnered dance danced to Swing Jazz music with origins in the 1920’s and 30’s Harlem, New York. The highly energetic dance includes footwork that found common ground in dance halls along with other popular dances of yesteryear including the Charleston and Tap. Just listen to big bands like Duke Ellington or Count Basie and you’ll easily catch your feet dancing to the beat. It’s the combination of borrowed footwork and swingin’ rhythms that lends Lindy Hop to be energetic and highly improvisational dance.
